Tottenham are officially out of the UEFA Europa Conference League following a decision from the football governing board.
As reported by BBC Sport, Spurs have been eliminated from Europe after their final group stage match against Stade Rennais was forfeited by Tottenham, meaning they have been dealt a 3-0 loss and are now out of the Europa Conference League.
The match, which was due to take place two weeks ago, was postponed due to rising Covid-19 cases in the Tottenham squad. Antonio Conte’s side had to win if they were to secure passage to the next round of the competiton.
However, it has now been declared that Spurs have fortified the match, which means the north London side are out of Europe heading into the New Year. Yet based on reaction on social media, Tottenham fans are buzzing to be out of the Europa Conference League.
The competition is in its maiden year as UEFA’s third-tier club tournament, with Spurs the sole English club to qualify for the group stage. Indeed, Tottenham’s decision to forfeit their final match indicates that Conte’s side don’t see any value in playing in the Europa Conference League.
After all, given the congested fixture list, midweek games in Europe would have played havoc on Spurs’ squad. And whilst it is a trophy that Tottenham could have easily won, the Europa Conference League is simply not worth it for the north London side.
The winners of the competition only gain qualification for the UEFA Europa League, and based on Tottenham’s current form, they could make a charge for top-four in the Premier League.
