Chris Sutton has made it clear that Tottenham Hotspur ‘won’t win anything’ under Antonio Conte this season, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

The former striker was responding to a caller on 606 who suggested that Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur won’t win any silverware this term, before agreeing with that statement.

Antonio Conte and Erik ten Hag are the men in those dugouts, both in their first full seasons in charge, but the Italian does have the benefit of having joined last November and getting a taster of the Spurs squad.

Things probably went a lot better than Conte and Spurs fans would have imagined because, not only did they secure Champions League football, but they also pipped their bitter rivals Arsenal to that fourth spot last season.

As a result, there have been a lot of positive vibes around Hotspur Way, added with a strong summer transfer window, and the hope that the club can end their trophy drought.

Well, whilst that belief is sky high for Spurs fans, and perhaps others from the outside, there are others who think very differently.

“I am not going to take caller five, he is right, Manchester United and Spurs won’t win anything (this season),” said Sutton.

CONTE HOLDS THE KEY

The trophy-laden coach might ruffle a few feathers, annoy people from within or have a style of play that frustrates supporters.

But, at the end of the day, he is a proven performer as a manager from his days in the colours of Juventus to when he was in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

He holds the key to Tottenham’s success, it’s just a case of those upstairs continuing to back him, and if they do, he will reward them with a trophy.

The main aim for this season has to be to retain their Champions League status because a host of clubs want that golden ticket, if it means putting more eggs into that basket than the Champions League one, then so be it, because they can’t afford to let that competition slip away from them.
