Chris Sutton has issued his prediction for who will win when Newcastle United visit Chelsea. They meet at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the Premier League term.
The Blues and Toon round out the 2022/23 season in west London this Sunday after vastly contrasting campaigns. Chelsea are guaranteed to end the Premier League season outside of the top 10. While Newcastle have secured their place in next term’s Champions League.
It will mark the Magpies’ return to the UEFA competition for the first time since the 2003/04 season. While the Blues have produced their worst Premier League season yet, despite the incredible riches they have spent. They had never previously failed to get at least 50 points.

Chris Sutton issues his prediction for Chelsea vs Newcastle United
And Sutton expects Chelsea’s misery to continue as they host Newcastle on the final day of the Premier League season. The Celtic legend predicts in his column for the Daily Mail that Eddie Howe’s Saudi-backed Toon will be too strong for Frank Lampard’s west London outfit.
Even if Sutton also senses Newcastle’s players may have somewhat switched off after they secured a place in the Champions League. The Magpies limped across the line with a point at home to Leicester City on Monday. Now Sutton predicts Newcastle will beat Chelsea 2-0.
“Newcastle may be on the beach having secured their Champions League spot but they will still have too much for Chelsea,” Sutton claimed. “The Blues have been woeful this season.”

History does not favour Eddie Howe’s Magpies on Sunday
History does not favour Howe’s squad ahead of Newcastle visiting Chelsea, despite Sutton’s prediction of a 2-0 Toon win, though. The Magpies’ 1-0 win over the Blues at St James’ Park back in November through Joe Willock’s goal ended a four-game losing streak in the match.
Newcastle have also only won three of their past 15 fixtures against Chelsea dating back to 2014 across all competitions. That run includes 14 Premier League fixtures and one FA Cup tie. All three of Newcastle’s wins plus a 2-2 draw in September 2015 also came at St James’.
Chelsea have not lost at Stamford Bridge to Newcastle since May 2012 when a Papiss Cisse brace stunned the Blues. While the Toon have also not scored over their past three trips to west London – losing 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0. Ciaran Clark hit their last goal there in January 2019.
