Ruud Gullit has joined the chorus of football figures encouraging Steven Bergwijn to leave Tottenham Hotspur.
Bergwijn’s future becomes a talking point during every period of international games.
That’s because everytime the 24-year-old pulls on the orange of the Netherlands, he reminds Tottenham supporters what an excellent footballer he can be.
The former PSV Eindhoven winger scored in the 4-1 victory over Belgium earlier this week, making that five goals in his last four international outings.
In contrast, he hasn’t started a game for Spurs since way back in January and according to ESPN, Antonio Conte is willing to sell the Ajax-linked player for £21 million this summer.
After the Belgium demolition, Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands boss, told Bergwijn that he needs to leave Tottenham.
And Gullit has echoed those sentiments.
He said live on Ziggo Sport: “He just has to play. At Tottenham he also plays in a completely different role. Choose a good club if he can. If he gets the opportunity to go to Ajax, he should do it.”
You can’t blame the figures who believe Bergwijn should leave Tottenham.
The thing is, the problem is the player, not the club.
He has played under four different Spurs coaches – including Ryan Mason – and under none of them has he showed the sort of consistency needed to thrive in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho, Mason, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte have all tried to get a tune out of him and failed.
He has his moments for sure, like his stoppage-time double to give Tottenham a 3-2 victory at Leicester City earlier in 2022, but they’re few and far between.
