Former Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose believes Conor Gallagher should consider leaving Chelsea for Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
In a season of pure frustration at Selhurst Park, it’s almost typical that Gallagher’s only goal in the last 32 games came against his old employers, the England international curling a trademark shot into the back of Patrick Vieira’s net when the clock struck 90 back in October.
Gallagher was a revelation on loan at Palace during the 2021/22 campaign; scoring eight times and setting up five more in red-and-blue.

The Chelsea academy graduate opted to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge rather than consider a return to Selhurst, however, a decision Ambrose feels has been justified with Gallagher now a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England roster.
Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is a Newcastle target
“I would have liked to see (Gallagher) back at Crystal Palace. But would he have had as many appearances in the England squad? I don’t think so. So, he made the right decision,” the former Palace favourite tells talkSPORT (28 March, 9.50pm.
“He went to the tournament (the 2022 World Cup) as well.”
Gallagher failed to get off the bench in Qatar. But he did feature in both of England’s European Championship qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine, Southgate’s side beginning the new campaign with six points out of six.
The £40 million-rated Gallagher is now a summer target for Newcastle, according to The Athletic.
Chelsea may be forced to consider offers due to their Financial Fair Play concerns. And Ambrose, who spent two years at Newcastle between 2003 and 2005, is backing Gallagher to thrive under a coach who has coaxed career-best performances out of similarly energetic talents such as Joe Willock, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff.
“He’ll get a good club. A top eight club for sure,” Ambrose adds.
“I think Newcastle are a team he would excel in. He plays that high press, he’s energetic. And Eddie Howe is renowned for improving players by the way. He would fit very, very well in the Newcastle side.”
