Newcastle want Callum Hudson-Odoi and eyebrows have been raised after he missed Chelsea’s Under-21 clash with Fulham on Monday night.

Chelsea’s first team were in action on Sunday afternoon, drawing 2-2 in a frantic and dramatic clash with rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea’s hefty squad means not everybody was able to feature against Tottenham, so the Under-21 game gave fringe players a chance to shine.

Trevoh Chalobah and Ethan Ampadu were involved, as were summer signings Omari Hutchinson and Carney Chukwuemeka, but it didn’t help.

Chelsea lost 3-0 to Fulham and some were left wondering just where Callum Hudson-Odoi was, having been expected to play.

Newcastle want Callum Hudson-Odoi

West London Sport reported on Monday that Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell were both expected to start for Chelsea’s Under-21’s.

Yet whilst Chilwell did start the game, Hudson-Odoi was nowhere to be seen; not even on the bench for the Blues.

That has set tongues wagging amid interest from Newcastle United.

The Sun report that Newcastle are ‘edging closer’ to signing Hudson-Odoi on loan for the season.

It’s suggested that Newcastle are making their move for Hudson-Odoi and he may have been pulled from the Under-21 game due to a move away.

Newcastle’s Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi were both invited to Stamford Bridge by Todd Boehly for Sunday’s game with Tottenham.

Behdad Eghbali was spotted speaking to both of them, leaving some to wonder whether Newcastle are targeting a Chelsea player or two.

Hudson-Odoi is a prime candidate having been given the green light to go out on loan this summer.

The 21-year-old seemingly isn’t in Thomas Tuchel’s plans this term and a loan move is the best step for his development.

Newcastle certainly want a right-sided winger and Hudson-Odoi fits the bill, even if it’s not an exciting permanent signing like previous target Moussa Diaby.

There has been no explanation for Monday’s omission and Newcastle may well be positioning themselves for Hudson-Odoi’s arrival.
