Tony Cascarino has slammed Tottenham Hotspur’s ‘bad’ decision to refund their fans after they were slapped 6-1 by Newcastle United last week.
The former striker added that Chelsea fans have ‘more of a right’ to ask for such refunds after watching their team lose five on the bounce and score only one goal from their last seven matches.
Tottenham not only lost 6-1 to high-flying Newcastle last Sunday, but they were 5-0 down inside 20 minutes – it resulted in Cristian Stellini getting booted out and Ryan Mason replacing him.
Before that game, there were already issues with the club’s performances, with Antonio Conte recently getting sacked after his post-match rant after his side’s 3-3 draw to Southampton.
But that Newcastle defeat, most importantly the manner of it, just took the blood pressure levels of fans through the roof.
That’s why the players, in order to cool the situation down, refunded fans who made that long journey to St James’ Park, but Cascarino wasn’t having any of it, as he told talkSPORT.
“I don’t agree with players paying for fans to travel,” said Cascarino. “I think it’s a bad idea. I think you are putting a persistence in.
“What are you going to do? Every time you have a hammering, the players are going to fork out for the fans. So, if you win can you charge more? Do we get a bonus? I didn’t like it!
“If the players said before the game ‘look, our fans have been watching us and we haven’t been good of late. Let us get together before the game and we will sort out the fans’. Instead of announcing it after the defeat.
“I have watched Liverpool a lot this season. They have had a number of bad defeats. I think Chelsea fans have more of a right to say ‘can we have a refund’. In their last games, they have had one goal and they have had six defeats.
“You support your club and sometimes it’s not good. Through good or bad times, you support your club.”

Tottenham’s response to that hammering off Newcastle United was to go 2-0 down to Manchester United after 45 minutes on Thursday.
But this time, they managed to claw something back and secure a point in front of their own supporters.
It will be interesting, if they receive the same beating against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, what the reaction will be like because, any time there is now a heavy defeat, fans will point towards wanting a refund.
