Chad Ochocinco Johnson has always been one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s most vocal supporters, but Lionel Messi’s World Cup form has left him questioning how much longer he can keep making that case.

The former NFL star has followed football closely for years and has never hidden his admiration for Ronaldo.

Yet Messi’s performances for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup have forced him to reconsider what he is seeing.

Chad Ochocinco admits Messi is changing the Ronaldo debate

This was not a throwaway comment. Johnson has long backed Ronaldo in the wider GOAT debate, which is why his reaction to Messi’s latest World Cup exploits carries extra weight.

“It’s hard for me to continue to try to defend what I thought was the greatest player of all time in Cristiano with the way Messi is playing.

“What Messi has done, I already knew his greatness, I understood his greatness. The appreciation that I had for the beautiful game, I understand he was probably one of the best to ever do it.”

His point was not that Messi has suddenly become great. Rather, he was acknowledging that Messi is continuing to perform at a level that makes the traditional arguments for Ronaldo increasingly difficult to maintain.

Messi has already broken multiple World Cup records during the tournament, including the all-time goals record, while continuing to dictate matches for Argentina at 38 years old.

Why Ochocinco cannot believe what Messi is doing at 38

The part that appeared to leave Johnson most stunned was not simply the records, but the fact Messi remains the central figure in Argentina’s attack so deep into his career.

“And just what he is doing at his sixth World Cup at 38 years old, it’s unbelievable. When you’re 39 years old, playing for your country, you’re supposed to come off the bench. Not dictating games.

“I’m almost at a loss for words trying to describe what he’s been able to do, forget his whole career, just what he’s been able to do at the World Cup right now. It’s unreal.”

That observation captures why Messi’s tournament has generated such a strong reaction. At this stage of a player’s career, merely making a World Cup squad would be impressive. Messi, meanwhile, remains one of the competition’s defining performers.

For Ronaldo supporters, Messi’s latest run has made the debate increasingly uncomfortable. For Ochocinco, it is becoming harder and harder to defend the position he once held with complete confidence.
