Celtic supporters didn’t exactly take kindly to the club’s latest message

Celtic fans have for some time been demanding a tweet about the manager.

Pressure has been heaped on Neil Lennon during a disastrous campaign that has seen the champions eliminated from three cup competitions while falling 23 points behind Rangers.

The Betfred Cup defeat against Ross County in November sparked protests outside the ground calling for Lennon’s dismissal, and supporters have continued to demand change.

Off the pitch, Celtic have stumbled from one PR disaster to another, whether it be their decision to press ahead with the trip to Dubai or Lennon’s extraordinary press conference last Monday.

If the reaction from supporters today is anything to go by, they’ve outdone themselves this time.

As unpopular as Lennon may be with elements of the support, he hasn’t quite received the level of vitriol that was directed at Brendan Rodgers following his shock decision to quit and take the Leicester City job in 2019.

On Tuesday morning, however, Celtic posted a tweet wishing their former boss a happy birthday.

It didn’t go down well.

The club followed that tweet up with a somewhat less controversial birthday message, this time congratulating former striker Gary Hooper.

Rodgers was at the helm for Celtic’s ‘Invincibles’ season and won seven titles during his time in Glasgow.

His Leicester side are currently third in the English Premier League, above the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham.

Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Livingston left them without a win in 2021 after four games, and they return to action on Wednesday night when Hamilton Accies visit Glasgow.

Lennon remains in charge, despite the likes of Eddie Howe, Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard having been linked with his job.
