The West Brom winger, on loan at Parkhead, has “55” – a number associated with their rivals over at Ibrox, Rangers – as part of his Twitter handle.

New Celtic loan signing Oliver Burke has moved to clarify why his Twitter handle features a number which has been associated with rivals Rangers over the past few years.

The 21-year-old became the reigning Scottish Premiership champions’ first signing of the January transfer window after joining from West Bromwich Albion on a six-month loan deal.

Burke remains the most expensive Scottish player after signing for the Baggies from German club Red Bull Leipzig for a £15m fee in August 2017, but has been getting little game time at The Hawthorns recently.

Despite his credentials, talent and potential, Burke’s arrival at Parkhead hasn’t been universally hailed by the Celtic fanbase, with some fans having criticised the club for having made a loan signing as opposed to a permanent arrival.

Others have pulled up the fact that the winger’s Twitter handle is “OliverBurke55”, a number which has found itself linked with Gers in recent years due to the fact they’re currently on 54 Scottish league titles, hence their current mission to win their 55th one.

However, Burke cleared things up with a tweet explaining that “55” is simply the number he was given when playing in the academy at Nottingham Forest, where he came through the ranks:

Celtic, who are currently top of the Scottish top flight but level on points with Rangers, will hope Burke hits the ground running in search of another title when the season resumes later this month.
