Prior to this season, Celtic were favourites to win the Scottish Premiership and seal 10-in-a-row.

Now, with Rangers having extended their lead to 18 points with a 1-0 win against Livingston on Wednesday night, Celtic’s chances of retaining their title are extremely remote.

The gap has this week been recognised by a popular American data analysis outlet.

FiveThirtyEight, which was founded by renowned statistician Nate Silver, published its latest ‘Club Soccer Predictions’ on Wednesday morning.

They rate Celtic’s chances of pulling off a shock comeback at less than 1%, with Rangers standing a greater than 99% chance of becoming champions.

The outlook for Steven Gerrard’s men in terms of Europa League success was somewhat less sunny.

Despite having gone 11 games unbeaten on their way to the tournament’s last 16, they’ve been given just a 3% chance of winning it.

Rangers are slight favourites to beat Slavia Prague at 54%, but their chances of then making it through to the semi-finals are rated at just 22%, and only 8% to make the final.

Manchester United are considered favourites to win the tournament at 23%, followed by Arsenal at 14% and Ajax at 11%.

As quoted by Glasgow Live, Gerrard has spoken of his excitement at the prospect of progressing even further in the tournament.

He said: “In terms of the draw, it’s an exciting draw for both teams. Both teams are on a real exciting journey from a personal point of view.

“They’ve performed very well against some high level teams along the way.

“Slavia knocking Leicester out was a big coup for them because Leicester are going so well themselves, so they’re going to come into the game full of confidence and rightly so.

“But we’ll be ready, we’ll be prepared. We’ve got some real important league games prior to that we need to focus on but we are really looking forward to the two games.

“They’re mouthwatering and may the best team win and get to the last eight, because that opportunity excites us.”
