Rangers faced Bayer Leverkusen in the last Scottish football match to be played in front of a full house
It looks like being some time yet before fans can return to Scottish football stadiums.
Thats the verdict of Scotland’s National Clinical Director, who has delivered another update on the potential return of fans to stadia.
Professor Jason Leitch has routinely addressed the subject on BBC Radio Scotland’s Off The Ball, and on Monday morning addressed the nation on that station’s Good Morning Scotland show.
Although small numbers of fans were allowed to attend matches earlier this season, such as Ross County’s 1-1 draw with Livingston in November, increased restrictions have ensured the vast majority of this season’s Scottish football action has taken place behind closed doors.
The last match in Scotland to have been watched by a capacity crowd was Rangers’ Europa League match against Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox on March 12, with the scheduled derby against Celtic three days later being cancelled.
In the wake of Scotland’s 11-6 victory over England in the rugby, Leitch was asked when Scottish sports fans might be able to attend such occasions in person.
He replied: “It’s going to be some time yet. I can’t give you a date.
“One of the big challenges we still have – R number down, positivity down, prevalence still too high.
“We’ve got to be really, really cautious about any opening just now.”
Rangers extended their lead at the top of the Premiership on Sunday, but only by one point as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park.
Celtic had beaten Motherwell 2-1 at home the previous day, and now trail their rivals by 21 points in the Premiership.
Neil Lennon’s men are in action again on Wednesday when they face St Mirren in Paisley, while Steven Gerrard’s side play host to Tommy Wright’s Kilmarnock on Saturday.
