Jaylon Tyson has issued an apology after his comments suggesting Cleveland belongs to Donovan Mitchell rather than LeBron James drew attention following a Cavaliers win.

Jaylon Tyson spoke after the Cleveland Cavaliers’ victory as LeBron James returned to the city and received a tribute from the organization.

The remarks quickly circulated due to how they framed the franchise’s identity, especially after a legend like James made his return to the city.

Jaylon Tyson and Donovan Mitchell address Cleveland identity

Jaylon Tyson made the initial comments while praising Donovan Mitchell’s role with the Cavaliers. He suggested the team and fanbase should now center around Mitchell.

“This is Donovan Mitchell’s city now. When he comes back here, we’re gonna make sure everyone roots for him like they did for LeBron. This is his city.”

Donovan Mitchell immediately redirected the focus back to LeBron James, who many consider the greatest player in the history of the franchise.

“As much as I appreciate that, at the end of the day, LeBron laid the foundation. He deserves the energy that he’s got here. First title in 50-something years.”

Jaylon Tyson later addressed the reaction and clarified his intent. He said there was no desire to diminish LeBron James or his legacy.

“There was no disrespect there. Bron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game. I was a Cavs fan growing up because of him. If I offended anyone, I’m sorry. I take personal responsibility.”

The apology reaffirmed Tyson’s respect for James and his place in Cleveland history. While James himself didn’t react, it seems unlikely that the King would be upset about the Cavaliers rallying behind the face of the franchise.

However, Mitchell’s spot as the face of the Cavaliers might be in jeopardy should LeBron decide to return to the Cavaliers next season, as he winds down his legendary career.
