Newcastle United ace Miguel Almiron is one of the Premier League players of the season so far for Jamie Carragher. The Paraguayan has been a real revelation under boss Eddie Howe.
Almiron has burst out of the shadows to cement an instrumental role at St James’ Park this term. The 28-year-old had struggled to dazzle every week following Howe replacing Steve Bruce at the helm. But he is now firmly one of the first players on the Magpies’ teamsheet.

Howe only started Almiron in 11 of his 20 Premier League games under the Toon boss last season. He also only saw the 47-cap dynamo score one goal and fail to lay on an assist. Yet Almiron has netted nine goals in 16 outings this term and has started in all of their fixtures.

Almiron has now doubled his career Premier League tally having only scored nine times in 110 games before this season. His previous-best single-season haul was also just four set in 2019/20 and 20/21. But he is still yet to match his two assists from the 2019/20 season.
A goal on Saturday will also see Almiron become the first Newcastle player to score double figures this term. Howe’s team host Leeds United at St James’ on New Year’s Eve. Almiron goes into the match as the Toon’s top-scorer to Callum Wilson, who has recorded six goals.

Almiron is stunning Carragher after reports he could leave Newcastle
Only Erling Haaland (20), Harry Kane (13), Ivan Toney (11) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (10) so far have outscored Almiron. They are also strikers, with James Maddison (7) the next-best midfielder. Almiron’s goals would also have been the most by a Newcastle star last season.
His seismic shift in output, after a summer linking Rafa Benitez’s £21m signing from Atlanta United in January 2019 with a move away, has stunned Carragher. The Sun touted Everton as a potential landing spot for Almiron. While the Mirror suggested he could go for £10m.

Carragher has now voiced his praise in a column for The Telegraph. He has noted: “Miguel Almiron is one of the players of the season – he would make my XI at the halfway stage.”
