Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports – during commentary of Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Southampton – that he expects Divock Origi to leave. However, he claims Origi would get a five-year deal, if based off of his sub appearances.
Origi, 27, came off the bench on Tuesday night as Liverpool came from behind on the south coast to win 2-1. A real backs-to-the-wall win for the Reds, who keep the pressure on Manchester City in the race for the title.
The striker is out of contract at the end of the season. The Belgium striker has decided to allow his deal to expire, given he has only been afforded 17 appearances this term. 12 of those have come from the substitute’s bench.
Fabrizio Romano claimed recently that he has told FSG that he will be leaving, with AC Milan the hot favourites to get him. Carragher claimed during commentary he will go, but explains why he deserves a new deal.
“I think he’s leaving. He’s one of those few players who is better coming off the bench than starting. If you judge Origi judged on his performances from the bench, you give him a five-year deal,” Carragher said, on Sky Sports.
Carragher thinks Origi leaves Liverpool: The right decision?
It is hard to underestimate both Origi’s contribution during his seven years at Anfield, but also his attitude. The Belgian has never complained or moaned about a lack of game time – and of course, he goes down in folklore.
His brace against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals, and one in the final against Tottenham, makes him a hero. That, as well as his incredible form against Everton. But he is set to leave in the coming weeks.
While Liverpool would love to keep a quality of his striker and attitude in reserve, they have to respect his loyalty and the fact he has always produced when needed. The right decision is for Origi to leave.
