Rangers have been heavily linked with winger Carlos Mendes Gomes – but he has now confirmed that he isn’t heading to Ibrox this summer.

The Gers have landed one attacker already this summer, with Oostende forward Fashion Sakala arriving on a pre-contract agreement.

Another winger could still be on the radar, but any hopes of luring Mendes Gomes to Glasgow are now officially over.

Rangers’ pursuit of Mendes Gomes

The Scottish Sun reported in April that Rangers had held talks with Morecambe over a deal to sign Mendes Gomes having watched him extensively.

Blackburn Rovers then joined the race, with Mendes Gomes – a former Atletico Madrid talent who ended up playing for West Didsbury and Chorlton in Manchester – hitting 16 goals and five assists last term.

Primarily a right-sided winger, Mendes Gomes fired Morecambe to promotion, and could have earned a huge move to Rangers to play under Steven Gerrard.

Mendes Gomes confirms his next move

On Saturday, Mendes Gomes took to Twitter in order to say goodbye to Morecambe, posting an emotional farewell after achieving so much with them.

Many were left wondering just where Mendes Gomes was going, but they didn’t have to wait long as Luton Town confirmed they had completed his signing.

Keeping an eye on Mendes Gomes in the Championship may be wise for Rangers, as the jump from League Two to the expectation at Ibrox would have been huge, and this could be a somewhat intermediate move for him.
