Carlos Carvalhal agrees that Callum McManaman should feature more often, after the on-loan West Bromwich Albion winger impressed despite Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat against Brentford on Tuesday.
McManaman arrived at Hillsborough on a half-season loan in January but has started just once for the Owls so far, appearing seven times as a substitute.
The Scouser’s cameo against the Bees, however, prompted Wednesday supporters to take to social media in their numbers and plead with Carvalhal to hand the 25-year-old more game time – starting at Leeds United this Saturday.
The Portuguese coach told the Sheffield Star: “Callum deserves probably more than what we are giving to him.
“He is working hard but he’s not had chances as we have been winning the games. He had a chance to play against Brentford. It was not a surprise to me how he played. He’s working very well and we are very happy with him.”
Carvalhal added: “Callum has been doing well but it is not easy to go inside the team when we are winning.”
McManaman has played precious little football over the past two campaigns, despite West Brom paying £4.75 million to sign him from Wigan Athletic in January 2015.
And with less than 18 months to run on his contract, the winger’s Hillsborough spell is an opportunity to put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking about McManaman’s Baggies exile, West Brom boss Tony Pulis told BBC West Midlands: “With the Callum situation, obviously I bought Callum so I wanted him to do well.

“But in my opinion, at times he didn’t suit what we wanted.
“That’s a player I’ve brought in and you hold your hand up and say ‘I might have made a mistake in respect of what I expected of him and what I got from him’.
“You have to put into that mix the fact that [Nacer] Chadli and [Matt] Phillips are playing wide.
“I’m not so sure Callum is of the quality of Phillips and Chadli.
“Although Callum is a great lad and has been fantastic around the place, I just think the team has moved on a little bit from Callum.”
