Kris Boyd has watched his former side build up a significant gap at the top of the Premiership, and in the wake of Neil Lennon’s resignation the ex-Rangers striker has given his take on the malaise at Celtic.

The club confirmed on Wednesday morning that Lennon had left the club, with John Kennedy taking over as interim manager.

If both Rangers and Celtic win their next two Premiership matches, the leaders would need just a point on March 21 to win the league at the home of their rivals.

Boyd, who won two titles in his time at Ibrox, has pinpointed a number of issues that have plagued the champions this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Looking at Celtic’s squad right now, we all know the financial muscle they have, but I don’t think any of the goalkeepers are up to it.

“And then looking at the backline, there are so many players there that will probably move on.

“When you look at the whole process and structure of what’s going on at Celtic – when you see the money that has been wasted on transfers already – and then you say, “Go and recruit 10 or 12 players”, I don’t think I would trust anybody to go and spend the money.

“I think Celtic are in a very difficult situation right now. It’s all well and good having money, but they’ve spent it on players that have not, so far, shown that they are up to it.”

In a statement released on the official Celtic website, Lennon thanked the club and expressed his disappointment at the manner in which his tenure has ended.

He said: “We have experienced a difficult season due to so many factors and, of course, it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to hit the same heights as we did previously.

“I have worked as hard as ever to try and turn things around, but unfortunately we have not managed to get the kind of run going that we have needed.

“I have always given my best to the Club and have been proud to deliver silverware to the Celtic supporters. The Club will always be part of me. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic.

“I would like to thank so many people at the Club who have given me so much and I would also like to thank my family for their love and support. I wish the Celtic supporters, players, staff and directors nothing but success for the future.”
