Can Harrison Ashby play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup? Many fans are wondering after the £3m signing was announced earlier today.

After completing a £40m deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Everton, the Magpies have now added another homegrown option to their squad in Ashby, who has signed a long-term contract at St James’ Park.

With the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton scheduled for tonight, many supporters have been wondering if the 21-year-old can take part.

So, can Ashby play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup? Let’s take a look…

Can Harrison Ashby play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup?

Well, Ashby’s situation is an interesting one.

As detailed on the EFL’s official website under rule 6.4: No Registered Player shall play for more than one Club in the Competition in any one Season.

That would initially make it seem as if Ashby cannot play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, but crucially, he did not actually make an appearance for West Ham in the competition this season before departing east London.

Therefore, the Scotland Under-21 international is allowed to play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.

Unfortunately, Gordon is not eligible, as he did appear in the competition earlier this season for Everton.

While Ashby is technically eligible, it does not sound like he will be part of Eddie Howe’s squad to face Southampton at St James’ Park tonight, judging by his comments about joining Newcastle.

The right-back told Newcastle’s official website: “I could not be happier. I can’t get the smile off my face and it’s a proud day for me and my family. I’m buzzing to come to the game tonight, to meet the fans and to get a taste of the atmosphere.”

Those words clearly suggest Ashby will most likely be watching from the stands.

However, if Newcastle can take advantage of their 1-0 aggregate lead and reach the final, then their latest signing would be in contention to make an appearance at Wembley for his new side.
