Can Anthony Gordon play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup? Some fans have been asking on Google as talks with Everton advance.
The Magpies now have one foot in the Carabao Cup final after Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Southampton in the first leg of the semi-final.
As a deal for the Everton No.10 advances in the meantime, many have wondered if he will be eligible to play against Southampton in the second leg and potentially the final at Wembley.
So, can Anthony Gordon play for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup? Let’s take a look…
Anthony Gordon Carabao Cup eligibility for Newcastle
Well, Gordon has already played in the Carabao Cup for Everton this season.
The 21-year-old was handed 44 minutes of action by Frank Lampard as Everton suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Bournemouth in the third round.
Therefore, Gordon is officially cup-tied for the Carabao Cup this season, and cannot be involved in the competition for another side.

As detailed on the EFL’s official website under rule 6.4: No Registered Player shall play for more than one Club in the Competition in any one Season.
It was the Telegraph who claimed that Newcastle believe they have now beaten Chelsea to the England Under-21 international’s signature, with the forward expected on Tyneside before the weekend to seal the transfer.
Everton are demanding £60m for Gordon, although Sky Sports believe £40m could be enough to tempt the Toffees into a sale due to their financial issues.
If Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth can strike an agreement with the Merseysiders, they will unfortunately be forced to leave Gordon out of the semi-final second leg against Southampton on Tuesday 31st January, as well as a potential final at Wembley.
Nevertheless, in the likes of Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Callum Wilson, Newcastle have enough firepower to take them all the way in the Carabao Cup without Gordon.
