Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been discussing some of the best free-kick takers he’s worked with and he’s touched on James Maddison.
Wilson says that Maddison is the only player he’s seen during his career who would actively practise his free-kicks every single day in training.
It’s not a surprise to hear that Maddison is such a keen trainer when it comes to free-kicks. After all, he is unbelievable from dead-ball situations.
Of course, these comments are made all the more interesting by the fact that it has recently been reported that Newcastle may try to bid again for Maddison in January if the midfielder’s asking price has reduced.
Wilson’s Maddison claim
The striker spoke about Maddison and how much he practices his free-kicks.
“I wouldn’t say I see him (Trippier) actively practising free-kicks outside, maybe one or two on a Friday, but I’m usually practising my finishing up the other end,” Maddison said.
“The one person throughout my career who I’ve seen practising free-kicks after every training session was James Maddison when we were at Coventry. He was young at the time, and when you’d go inside and look out of the window he’s still taking free-kicks. When I see him scoring them now, it’s not just by luck or by fluke, it’s years and years of practise.”
Big decision to make
If Maddison comes to Newcastle United then Eddie Howe will have a big decision to make, who should take the Magpies’ free-kicks?
Kieran Trippier is currently the number-one choice from each and every dead ball situation, but Maddison is one of the only players in England who can rival his prowess from free-kicks.
It may have to come down to who impresses Howe more in training, and based on what Wilson says, Maddison may be the one who wins that battle.
