According to The Times, Newcastle United retain an interest in James Maddison.

The England midfielder was the subject of multiple bids from the Magpies in the summer transfer window, and according to this report, Newcastle could continue to pursue Maddison in January, but only if his asking price drops.

Leicester City knocked back bids in the region of £50m in the summer, and Newcastle will be hoping that this sort of figure will be enough to land the star in the new year.

Of course, that may be wishful thinking from the Magpies. After all, Leicester are seemingly going to be embroiled in a relegation battle, and the last thing you want to do in that situation is to sell one of your best players.

However, with the midfielder’s contract up in 2024, there may be the temptation from Leicester to cash-in in January before the player’s market value plummets as he enters the final year of his deal.

Maddison himself may well be open to a move to St James’ Park after Leicester’s terrible start to the season, but unfortunately, the decision doesn’t lie in his hands.

This would, undoubtedly, be a fantastic signing for Newcastle as they look to add more creativity to their side, but as the summer showed, this won’t be an easy deal to get over the line.

Factor in that there has also been interest from Tottenham for the so-called ‘super talent’ and it’s hard to place any sort of confidence in Newcastle’s ability to sign Maddison up in January.

However, with United clearly keen, this is a situation to keep an eye on, and given Leicester’s recent lack of investment from their owners, they may well be tempted to sell Maddison in January in order to raise a few funds.
