Callum Wilson has stated that he doesn’t understand why West Ham United always push for a ‘similar profile’ striker amid their transfer links with Sevilla forward, Youssef En-Nesyri.

The Newcastle United forward added that West Ham always go for the ‘wrong option’, with David Moyes looking to bolster his forward line during the January transfer window, as he told The Footballer’s Football Podcast.

Michail Antonio, who was talking with Wilson during their weekly podcast, has struggled in front of goal this season, scoring two Premier League goals and his game time is also drying up.

That’s probably why there is talk of the Jamaica international heading for the exit door this month, although, the new kid on the block, Gianluca Scamacca, isn’t having a great time of it himself either.

The 24-year-old joined during the summer transfer window and he has only scored three Premier League goals, with suggestions that £17.5 million Sevilla star, Youssef En-Nesyri, could be an option to bring in.

But Wilson shared why somebody ‘different’ needs to be brought in, that’s if the London club add striker number three to their squad.

“The one thing for me, whenever I see West Ham sign a striker or linked with a striker, it’s always the similar profile,” said Wilson.

“In terms of what type of striker you are trying to buy, it’s always tall and gangly centre-forward. I think sometimes you are looking at the wrong option because the Premier League is difficult sometimes, especially for a centre-forward, it’s not an easy position.

“I just think if you have someone who is this same profile as this En-Nesyri, and Scamacca, I would probably say are similar looking players, in terms of stature and the way that they play, then you go for a totally different option if you are going to have three.

“You don’t go for three of the same because what’s the point? You are trying to have different options. Different games require different strikers, ones that are going to drop in short and ones that are going to run in-behind. You need to keep it mixed up.

“I am not part of your recruitment, maybe I need to come down and start filling up your club with good players,” Wilson laughed whilst talking to Antonio.

WEST HAM STRIKER ISSUES

This just isn’t an issue under David Moyes, but a problem that has stemmed for years and years, from Upton Park to the London Stadium.

In recent times, the forwards that have worked are Michail Antonio, who was a tricky winger by trade, Marko Arnautovic, who was also turned into a centre-forward by Moyes after struggling out wide, as well as Jarrod Bowen.

None of them are out-and-out strikers, so from Simone Zaza to Marouane Chamakh, it’s not exactly a great track record in East London when it comes to goalscoring strikers.
