“Call yourself an Arsenal fan”: Ian Wright criticises angry fan following club announcement

Ian Wright has taken to Instagram in furious fashion after some Arsenal supporters expressed frustration at Eddie Nketiah’s new contract.

What’s the story?

Earlier today, the Gunners announced that Nketiah had signed a new five-year contract, which will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until June 2027.

Now, we think that’s good news for the north Londoners, although some Arsenal fans seem to disagree.

In the Instagram comments section, one supporter cried: “Not good enough for number 14 we should have let him go free that’s the waist time and money.”

From what we can decipher, this supporter doesn’t feel Nketiah deserves to wear such an iconic shirt, and also doesn’t believe the 23-year-old is good enough to play for Arsenal.

After Wright happened to stumble across this horrible message, he was outraged.

The 58-year-old wrote: “What’s a number? Why don’t you say nothing if you have nothing positive to say about our players? You can never call yourself an Arsenal fan with negativity of this nature. Would you say this to Eddie’s face?”

We couldn’t agree more – neither could Gabriel Magalhães, by the sounds of it.

The term ‘supporter’ seems to have been lost on a number of fans.

They are meant to get behind their own rather than criticise them, and to react like this before Nketiah has even kicked a ball in his No.14 shirt is toxic, to say the least.

Arsenal must add to Eddie Nketiah

While we believe Nketiah’s renewal is good business by the Gunners, the north Londoners still need to sign another forward following the departure of Alexandre Lacazette.

It also mustn’t be forgotten that Mikel Arteta still hasn’t replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang either, who was a significant player for the Gunners.

By the sounds of it, Gabriel Jesus is close to joining from Manchester City in a deal worth £50m, while there has also been talk of a move for Victor Osimhen.

As long as one new striker is signed – at least – then the Nketiah deal can be deemed solid business.
