Caitlin Clark has made it clear what the Indiana Fever must prioritize in free agency as they aim to contend for a WNBA title this season.

The Fever are entering a crucial phase after building a strong young core, with expectations rising following Clark’s arrival. With a large pool of free agents available, decisions made this offseason will shape their chances.

Clark acknowledged the uncertainty around the roster. But she also pointed to one key focus. And it highlights exactly where Indiana see their biggest need.

Caitlin Clark outlines Indiana Fever’s free agency approach

Speaking in a clip shared on X, Clark explained how the team is approaching the offseason.

“We weren’t trying to win it all last, that’s certainly what we’re trying to do this year,” Clark said. “It’s a very unique situation because there are over 100 free agents, so we only know about five or three people who will be on our team next year.”

The comment reflects the scale of change possible across the league. With so many players entering free agency, teams have an opportunity to reshape quickly.

For Indiana, that means balancing continuity with improvement. The goal has clearly shifted toward competing at the highest level.

Clark’s message underlines that ambition. The Fever are no longer just building, they are targeting success.

Caitlin Clark names Kelsey Mitchell as top priority

Clark then identified the player she believes should be at the centre of those plans.

“I feel like we had a great core. Our first priority is to sign Kelsey Mitchell back. She was First Team All-WNBA last year.

“Kind of my running mate in the backcourt. She makes it really easy for me,” Clark added.

The emphasis on Mitchell highlights the importance of chemistry. The backcourt partnership has already shown promise and could be key to Indiana’s success.

Retaining her would provide stability while allowing the team to build around an established core. That continuity is often critical for teams looking to take the next step.

Clark’s endorsement also reflects Mitchell’s impact on the floor. Her scoring and experience complement Clark’s playmaking. If Indiana can secure that partnership, it would be a major step toward their championship ambitions.
