Stan Collymore has written in The Mirror that British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe should buy Tottenham Hotspur, not Manchester United.

The former Liverpool striker has put forward an argument explaining why Tottenham Hotspur would be a better club to buy than Manchester United for the billionaire.

The pundit believes that at the age of 70, it would be give him more of a buzz watching Tottenham develop and grow under him than win trophies at United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a Manchester United fan, and he wants to buy the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners.

As reported by The Guardian last week, United have received bids.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the chairman of QIB, a Qatari bank, has reportedly made an official bid of a minimum £4 billion for the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

The bid from Sheikh al-Thani, via his Nine Two Foundation, came last Friday.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos chairman and Great Britain’s richest person, is another bidder.

Collymore wrote: “Sir Jim Ratcliffe should shelve his plans to buy Manchester United – and snap up Spurs instead.

“The billionaire businessman might be one of the frontrunners to take over at Old Trafford from the Glazers. But to my mind he should fix his gaze on north London.”

The pundit added: “The club needs fresh input. It needs someone with the vision to take them across the line.

“And Ratcliffe has just turned 70 years of age. At this stage of his life, surely leading Spurs to a cup win and taking them regularly into the Champions League would give him more of a buzz than winning trophies at Old Trafford.

“If he did take over up there, the expectation in 18 months’ time would be: ‘Deliver like Fergie.’

“For any owner, that’s a nightmare. It’s not exciting, being told you HAVE to win every year. Spurs would take any pot at the moment.”

Unlikely to happen

In our view, it is very unlikely that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will now change his mind over Manchester United.

We do not expect the 70-year-old, whose personal fortune is estimated at £6.075 billion and whose total worth including business interests adds up to around £13 billion (Goal) to withdraw his bid for United and then try to sign Spurs.

Tottenham are reportedly not for sale.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe supported United as a boy.

And United are arguably the biggest English club.
