Argentina not only made the headlines with their victory over England, but also with their controversial celebrations.

Lionel Messi’s team were 1-0 down with five minutes to go before scoring twice to reach the World Cup final.

Argentina celebrated the win even more than usual, given their dispute with England over the Falkland Islands.

However, they crossed the line by holding up a banner with the words: “Los Malvinas son Argentinas (The Falklands are Argentinian).”

This appeared to break FIFA’s strict ban on teams displaying “any materials that are of a political nature” at football matches.

British Member of Parliament Andrew Griffith has now called for FIFA to punish Argentina immediately.

British MP wants FIFA to punish Argentina over the Falkland Islands display

Andrew Griffith, the Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs, demanded that FIFA send a clear message to Argentina.

Griffith highlighted previous examples of England and Spain receiving punishments for making similar political statements.

“This is against FIFA’s rules,” he said. “In the past, FIFA has fined Britain for wearing poppies on their shirts; they’ve suspended Spanish players when they called for Gibraltar to be part of Spain.

“So, action this day from FIFA, whether it’s fines or suspensions, this cannot wait until the end of the tournament.

“It’s incredibly important that they send the signal that this behaviour was unacceptable.”

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez and former Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso held up the banner.

It remains to be seen whether FIFA will punish them, as well as the Argentine FA, and whether it will be before the final.

It would certainly set an eye-opening precedent if FIFA were to overlook the incident and Argentina got away with no punishment.
