A mix of youth and experience is important in any side and Brighton are looking to add a veteran to their ranks this summer.
After breaking the Premier League record with a profit of £122.8million in 2022-23, Brighton are starting to reinvest some of their hard-earned cash.
The Seagulls have spent just shy of £80million on five new arrivals, including Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United and Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord.
Their latest target is Mats Hummels, who is available as a free agent after his contract at Borussia Dortmund expired at the end of June.
It is understood that Brighton have held talks with German legend and are keen to bring him to the Premier League.
HITC revealed in June that Hummels’ agent alerted Newcastle United and Tottenham about his availability.
Fabian Hurzeler is keen
It is understood that Hummels has held talks with several clubs this summer as he weighs up his options.
Hummels has already rejected offers from Bologna and Ajax, as well as lucrative deals from the Saudi Pro League and MLS.
Brighton sense that he could be tempted by a move to the Premier League and manager Fabian Hurzeler is eager to get a deal over the line.
Hurzeler asked the Brighton hierarchy to consider the 35-year-old World Cup winner as a summer target and they have responded favourably and held talks with his representatives.
Brighton have previously used the free-agent market to add experience to their side with Adam Lallana and James Milner both moving to the south coast after their success at Liverpool.

Despite his age, Hummels has continued to play at the highest level and be a regular starter at Dortmund.
He played every minute of their Champions League campaign last season on their journey to the final.
