Last month, Manchester United beat fellow Premier League side Brentford to the signing of Christian Eriksen.

The Bees were hopeful of tying the Denmark international down after he impressed during a six-month loan spell, although the 30-year-old opted for a move to Old Trafford instead.

Now, however, Brentford could be about to make a better signing.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Fabrizio Romano, Thomas Frank is closing in on a deal for Mikkel Damsgaard, a player who has been described as the new Eriksen.

Tottenham tried to sign the 22-year-old last year after he shone for Denmark at EURO 2020, in which he scored a tremendous freekick against England in the semi-final at Wembley.

Damsgaard has also been compared to Kevin De Bruyne as well as Eriksen.

In our view, Damsgaard would be a better signing for Brentford than Manchester United’s capture of the Dane.

For a start, Eriksen turns 31 in February, so Erik ten Hag hasn’t exactly solved his midfield’s lack of creativity with a long-term solution.

Additionally, Manchester United are highly unlikely to sell Eriksen for much money – if any – whereas the signing of Damsgaard carries high potential resale value for Brentford, as he has the talent to become a star of the future.

In our view, the Red Devils should be signing gems such as Damsgaard, not Brentford.

Manchester United should beat Brentford to Damsgaard

In our view, Manchester United need to start acting like the giants they are in the transfer market.

That includes snapping up potential superstars such as Damsgaard – even if there is no immediate need for them, the Red Devils should still be signing these gems and loaning them out, like Chelsea tend to do.

There is nothing wrong with stockpiling talent if it is done sensibly. In truth, we wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Damsgaard is a £50m player by the time Eriksen’s three-year deal expires in 2025.

Only time will tell, but we think Brentford have outdone Manchester United by signing Damsgaard to replace Eriksen.
