Brenden Aaronson responds when asked about reports over a move to Leeds United

Brenden Aaronson has told a USA press conference that he is focused on playing for his country during the international break – when asked about reports linking him with Leeds. The Whites are ready to pay £20million.

Phil Hay reported late last week that Leeds were going to raise their initial offer from £15million, by a further £5million. It remains to be seen if Salzburg are going to accept – but their stance is clear, hands-off for now.

Little surprise Leeds want to sign Aaronson. Also on the radar of Dortmund, Barcelona and Bayern – Aaronson has sparkled for Salzburg since joining the club from MLS outfit Philadelphia Union in January 2021.

In just 12 months, the 21-year-old playmaker – who can also play on either wing – has scored 10 goals and created 12 more in 51 appearances. But he gave little away when asked about a move to Elland Road on Monday.

“It’s not really hard for me because I’m focused on what’s at hand,” Aaronson said, as quoted by GOAL. “I’m focused on these World Cup qualifying games and that’s all my thought process is on.

“That’s something that’s away from it and I’m really just not worried about it. I’m just worried about getting these wins with America,” Aaronson said. With a few days left in the window, though, anything is possible.

It has been widely reported that Aaronson is seen as the perfect fit for Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa is known to require a certain type of player that meets stringent requirements. Only a few can say they are ideal.

Aaronson – like Dan James was in the summer – is just that. The 15-time USA ace has the midfield energy, the stamina, the technical ability, the versatility, the goals, the assists – the potential, and the resale value.

He has a bit of everything – but all the ingredients combined make him ideal for Leeds and Bielsa. Do Leeds get him this month? Well, if they fail to nab his signature – they will be interested in the summer again, that is for sure.
