Marcelo remains one of Brazil’s most experienced modern players, having spent over a decade with the national team and featuring in two World Cups. Despite limited silverware, his perspective carries weight.

The former Real Madrid left-back won the Confederations Cup and built a career alongside some of football’s greatest names. His insight into coaching and dressing room dynamics is shaped by that elite experience.

That is why his recent comments, although not directly aimed at the Brazil national team, could serve as a reflection on decisions made before Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival.

Speaking to 1994 World Cup winner Romario, Marcelo was asked to name the best coach he worked with during his career.

Romario questioned: “Who was the best coach you had in your career?”

Marcelo highlighted several elite managers before pointing to a surprising name.

“I had four coaches who were amazing to me, who helped me improve a lot of things: [Zinedine] Zidane, [Carlo] Ancelotti, and [Jose] Mourinho.”

He then added: “But then I met [Fernando] Diniz. Diniz, for me, isn’t necessarily the best, but the understanding with Diniz was incredible.”

The response stood out given the calibre of coaches Marcelo worked with, suggesting his connection with Fernando Diniz left a particularly strong impression.

Brazil may have moved on from Fernando Diniz too quickly

Diniz was dismissed as Brazil head coach in January 2024 after a six-month spell in charge.

He managed just six matches, recording two wins, one draw and three defeats while balancing the role with his position at Fluminense.

Based on Marcelo’s comments, that decision could be viewed as premature, and since his substitute Dorival Junior stayed in the position for just over a year without success, it appears that it did not pay off.
