Brandon Aguilera has cast doubt on his future at Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest, telling ESPN that Estoril could turn his loan deal into a permanent transfer next summer.
One of Forest’s more under-the-radar signings since promotion, 19-year-old Aguilera joined from Deportiva Alajuelense for around £800,000 in June and is yet to make a single senior appearance in Garibaldi red.
There is a chance that he never will.
Aguilera, who featured three times for Costa Rica at the Qatar World Cup, joined Portuguese side Estoril on loan in January. And, while the opportunity to link up with legendary compatriot Keylor Navas at the City Ground obviously appeals to the teenage midfielder, Aguilera insists that his future is in Estoril’s hands due to the presence of an option-to-buy clause in his contract.

Brandon Aguilera is facing an uncertain future at Nottingham Forest
“Having Keylor as a team-mate in a league like the Premier League…” Aguilera begins. “He is a benchmark. He is a totally different goalkeeper. It is a scenario that I would like to experience at some point.
“I think that going to the Premier League from Costa Rica is a huge leap. Moving to England would have been a step that I don’t know if I could have done.
“But I feel very happy here. (Estoril) have a purchase option. This is a great club, they have sold great players to Benfica and Porto. These are the steps I’d like to take. Here, I can develop quite well.”
Aguilera, who turns 20 in June, spent the first half of the season at AD Guanacasteca in Costa Rica’s top-flight.
“I always thought that Estoril was a good option,” the youngster adds. “It is a team in which I can grow.
“No matter how fit you are, the rhythm of the game is only provided by training sessions and matches. I hope to be in the squad soon, and be able to play soon.”
A stylish attacking midfielder who can also play on the right-hand side; Aguilera would find game time hard to come by at parent club Nottingham Forest due to the surplus of creative talent at Steve Cooper’s disposal.
The Forest boss already has Morgan Gibbs-White, Brennan Johnson, Emmanuel Dennis, Gustavo Scarpa and Jesse Lingard at his fingertips.
