Bryson DeChambeau is entering this Open Championship attempting to avoid some unwanted history.

If he misses the cut at Royal Birkdale, he will become the first multiple-time major winner under 40 to miss all four major championship cuts in a single year.

DeChambeau tripled the 18th on Friday to miss the cut at Augusta, and simply performed poorly at Shinnecock and Aronimink. Now he prepares for what has historically been his worst major championship of the four events.

This would weigh heavily on most players’ minds, but some questions have been raised about how much it really means to DeChambeau. Brandel Chamblee compared him to YouTuber Grant Horvat in the build-up to The Open.

Brandel Chamblee says Bryson DeChambeau is ‘chasing Grant Horvat’

DeChambeau has been praised in the past for his commitment to his YouTube channel, which allowed him to connect with his audience like no other pro has done before. But that was when he was winning.

Now he’s in the habit of consistently missing major cuts, and his YouTube channel seems more like a distraction than an asset. While Rory McIlroy was in Southport scouting out Royal Birkdale, DeChambeau was in Canada filming for his latest YouTube video.

That led Golf Channel analyst Chamblee to question how committed DeChambeau really is to being the best golfer he can be. Speaking on “Live from The Open”, he said, “One of the bigger surprises of the year, Bryson DeChambeau.

“It’s almost like he went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat. It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game of golf instead of outplay everybody in the game of golf.”

DeChambeau has floated the idea of doing content creation full-time next year and only playing the majors. That’s very possible, as he’s out of contract with LIV Golf at the end of this year.

Many questioned if he’d be able to compete for major wins while being a YouTuber, but the real question is: does he even want to?
