When Michael Edwards leaves Liverpool, there’ll be an enormous void.
That’s because Edwards has turned water into wine and stone into gold for the Reds on many-an-occasion.
The fact that Liverpool’s director of football secured well over £200 million in transfer fees on personnel like Rhian Brewster, Philippe Coutinho, Mamadou Sakho, Dominic Solanke and Christian Benteke is frankly bewildering.
Problem is, the Premier League giants will be losing Edwards in a few weeks when his contract at Anfield expires.
Julian Ward is set to take over the transfer-related reins and if one rumour is true, he might have an Edwards-type masterstroke of his own on the horizon soon.
One player who hasn’t succeeded at Liverpool is Takumi Minamino.
Yes, he scored in the victory at Southampton this week but, by virtue of the fact that was his first Premier League start of the season, you could argue that the Japan international – signed from Salzburg in 2019 – is a very minor player in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Edwards spent only £7.25 million [Forbes] on the player two-and-a-half years ago, meaning that it wasn’t a massive gamble for the Merseysiders.
Michael Edwards leaves Liverpool with a capable replacement
But just like his predecessor, Ward could polish this gem enough to secure a major profit, too.
According to Anfield Watch, Inter Milan are interested in the 27-year-old and Liverpool want £17 million for him – a fee which, if received, will ensure that Ward has overseen a 150 percent profit on someone with 176 minutes of Premier League football this season.
That’s less than two full matches and if the Reds can secure that transfer fee, for someone who is barely even a squad player at Kirkby this season, well it has to be considered a blinding piece of business and one that Edwards himself would be proud of.
