Whilst Arsenal were celebrating their 2-0 win over Leeds in the League Cup, former Emirates Stadium hero Theo Walcott was about to step up and take a key penalty for Southampton against Chelsea.
The Saints had taken the European champions to penalties after an entertaining 1-1 draw in west London. With Walcott an experienced head in the English game, it made sense for the attacker to take a penalty against the Blues.
However, the former Arsenal star, who Arsene Wenger spent £12m on in 2006, missed his penalty as Walcott’s Southampton side would crash out of the League Cup.
Indeed, it would have been fate had Walcott scored from the spot against a London rival where the former England international had some of best Arsenal games against.
But destiny was not meant to be as the former-Arsenal star saw his penalty saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga. And as you would expect, supporters were not happy with Walcott’s miss.
After all, with Arsenal not competing in Europe this season, the League Cup is a competition of some importance this campaign. And having Chelsea out ahead of the quarter-finals would have been huge.
Arsenal fans facepalm as Walcott misses key penalty

Indeed, Walcott’s miss led to Chelsea progressing in the League Cup. And on social media, Arsenal fans were stunned that the 32-year-old forward missed from the spot.
