Bill Simmons thinks LeBron James will be making a mistake if he chooses to return to the Miami Heat in the 2026 offseason.
LeBron has held the attention of the entirety of the NBA media for the last three weeks with his thought process behind his 2026 free agency.
Multiple contenders are in the running for LeBron, with the Heat considered among the frontrunners. Simmons thinks this is a ‘fun’ destination, but in a backhanded way.
LeBron James to Miami will bring together ‘annoying fans and media’
On the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Show, the veteran media personality made his position on James’ free agency clear. He thinks it’ll be fun if James returns to Miami because it’ll bring the worst out of their ‘annoying’ fans and ‘annoying’ media.
“There’s two reasons I think it’d be fun if he went to Miami. One, I think it’s a terrible fit. Two, their annoying fans and even more annoying media will be going nuts because they think they’re going to win the title, and it’s going to be really fun to watch that crash and burn. If he goes there, great. It’s THE most annoying media. They know it. That’s the only way they get attention.”
Simmons also bluntly thinks it’s a terrible fit, despite the 41-year-old James averaging xxx last season. James also led the Lakers to a Playoff series win without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Why is LeBron James’ fit on the Heat considered ‘terrible’?
Calling this fit ‘terrible’ is simply a matter of opinion.
Simmons does have some arguments on his side. The Heat already has a paint-centric team with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo as its two leading stars.
James is a good shooter, but he can’t be the best shooter in the Heat’s starting five. He, like the two co-stars he’d have if he joined, needs to be surrounded by shooters to have the most success.
The minimal scoring guard play on the team will create a weird fit, expecting a soon-to-be 42-year-old to be the lead perimeter option for a title-contending team.
The positive spin on this is that the Heat have a very strong defensive base and enough rotational shooters like Bobby Portis, Pelle Larsson, and Simone Fontecchio to make up for any issues.
In addition, James reverting to his role as point guard might be the perfect way for this clunky-looking offense to function at its best.
There are more question marks from a basketball perspective on the Heat than other destinations, but the high caliber of talent might make it easy to figure out.
