Ian Wright has warned critics that they are making a ‘big mistake’ if they are judging Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez off last season.

The Arsenal legend hailed the 24-year-old for his ‘clinical’ goals that helped Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who were down to ten men in the first half, secure a stunning 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday at St James’ Park.

For Wright, he feels that if Darwin Nunez has now ‘clicked’, then he thinks that the opposition is in ‘trouble’, as he told Premier League Productions (28/08/23 at 2:15 pm).

It needs to be remembered that, before the Newcastle game, the £140k-a-week star (Spotrac) had only played 24 minutes during the first two Premier League matches.

This is despite the Uruguay star having a strong pre-season, with Andy Robertson admitting that he wasn’t too pleased.

Nonetheless, those two goals at St James’ Park might be lift off for the player, as Wright shared his thoughts.

“He is 24, come from a different league and to a massive club like Liverpool,” said Wright. “He is eager to do well. You could see that with some of his finishes last season.

“You are thinking ‘how has he missed that?’ Then he gets himself into positions where you think ‘wow, what great movement’, then not quite finishing it off.

“If people are going to judge him on that, then they are making a big mistake. A massive mistake. What I saw of him, and of him when he finishes, he still tries to finish how he should. He’s not tentative. What we saw with those two finishes, they weren’t tentative. That was somebody who has obviously worked a lot more on himself and his basics – that’s clinical.

“As you continue to miss and you have gone for such a big number and teams are having a go at Liverpool. ‘Oh, he’s a flop, this and that’. You hear about this. You get more tense. You get tighter – if he has (now) clicked, then people are in trouble.”

Nunez to start against Aston Villa?

Jurgen Klopp surely has to consider starting Nunez for the visit of Aston Villa on Sunday because that was a devastating cameo from the bench.

If he ever wanted to send out a message to his manager, well, there is no better way to do it than on the field of play.

And now Nunez will be hoping to get a run of form going because, in this attack-minded Liverpool side, he has the qualities to hit double-figure goals, easily!
