Leeds United have one of the smartest transfer teams in England.
They’ve made some unbelievable signings in recent years, the likes of Illan Meslier, Raphinha and Jack Harrison have all proven to be absolute coups, but sadly, Leeds haven’t been able to land every target they’ve ever gone after.
Indeed, we all know about the Whites’ lengthy pursuit of Rodrigo De Paul. Leeds desperately chased him last summer, while fans continued to pray that the Elland Road outfit could get a deal over the line.
Unfortunately, De Paul never came to west Yorkshire, despite tweeting his desire to join the club last summer, and now he’s ended up at Atletico Madrid.
A similar fuss was made of Matheus Cunha this summer after Leeds were linked with a move for the Brazilian, but once again, the story had the same ending, with Cunha joining Atletico Madrid.
It must sting to lose out on your transfer targets to the same club on numerous occasions, but for Marcelo Bielsa this must sting that much more.
Indeed, not only has Bielsa missed out on two top South American talents, the man who has signed them is one of his disciples.
Diego Simeone has spoken so highly of Bielsa in the past, and it’s clear that their football philosophies overlap as he’s snatched both De Paul and Cunha, despite Leeds’ continued attempts to bring them to Elland Road.
Bielsa has to be fuming that his former Argentina general has signed De Paul and Cunha, and the Leeds boss can only be left to ponder what could have been with those two.
