According to journalist Miguel Delaney’s Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent (12:03pm, January 27, 2023). Newcastle United could make a late move for Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison, a player Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have also been linked with.

Delaney has reported that Newcastle have a long-standing interest in Maddison, and that Premier League club Leicester could sell the England international playmaker if they get a big offer in the final days of the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old has been linked with Liverpool as well.

GiveMeSport have suggested interest from Liverpool and Manchester United in the Englishman.

The report claimed that Maddison is aware of interest in him from the Reds, the Red Devils and the Magpies.

Delaney wrote: “If there’s one big deal left to be done in the last few days of this window, it is James Maddison. There can of course be late surprises but he is seen as the biggest name with the most live interest.

“Leicester City are currently rejecting any approach, and the Independent has been told of one concrete offer, but it would need to be very high to change their mind.

“Newcastle United have the longest-standing interest but if there is a possibility of a purchase, it could create a late bidding war.”

Could Liverpool or Newcastle United sign James Maddison now?

In our view, Liverpool or Newcastle United are unlikely to be able to sign James Maddison from Premier League rivals Leicester City in the January transfer window.

Yes, the Foxes are not doing well in the Premier League at the moment, and that in itself could see them turn down offers for the 26-year-old in the final days of the January transfer window.

Moreover, Maddison himself could himself decide to wait until the end of the season to make a decision on his future.

Yes, Liverpool and Newcastle are big clubs, but we do not know if either of them will end up in the Premier League top four this season.

Other clubs could also come for Maddison at the end of the season.

We do not think that the Englishman will leave Leicester this month.
