Jan Vertonghen has posted a five-word verdict on Twitter after Tottenham played out an enthralling 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon – claiming it is the best fixture in the Premier League at the moment.
In a hotly-contested affair, Harry Kane scored an injury-time equaliser despite Chelsea being the better side. Kalidou Kouliably’s opener was cancelled out by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, before Kane equalised after Reece James’ effort.
A brilliant game which shows how far Tottenham have come on under Antonio Conte. Taking over a side that have been tagged ‘Spursy’, they now seem like a side that will fight for everything. Get results without playing well.
Conte and Thomas Tuchel were both sent off at the end of the match after a full-time fracas. Conte has even posted on Instagram saying he wished he tripped Tuchel during his Jose Mourinho-esque celebration for Chelsea’s second goal.
Reacting to the game on Twitter, the now-Benfica defender gave his verdict with a five-word post. He claims that the fixture, which has London rivalry and plenty of recent history, is the best fixture in Premier League football.
Vertonghen verdict after Tottenham draw with Chelsea
Is it the best the Premier League has to offer? It was certainly the best game of the new Premier League season so far. It has the London rivalry, the aggression between two tactical geniuses, and Champions League level quality.
Tempo, fight, quality, goals, red cards. It is hard to argue with Vertonghen. The Manchester derby is not as big anymore, given the decline of United. There is also City and Liverpool, but the feisty nature is not the same.
So, Vertonghen might have a point, especially given the two sides are battling for the same thing. To finish in third, and begin to close the gap on the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, come the end of the campaign.
