It is not unheard of for a Merseyside giant to embrace a player who grew up supporting their rivals from the other side of Stanley Park.

Ian Rush, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher famously had blue blood running through their veins before making their name at Liverpool.

Adam Lallana and Steve McManaman were also Everton supporters while Theo Walcott, who joined the Toffees in a £20 million deal from Arsenal in 2017, followed in his father’s footsteps while nailing his colours to the Anfield mast as a child.

Guus Til, then, should not be tainted by his Liverpool past if Everton fight off competition from Premier League rivals Wolves, West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace for the 23-year-old Dutch international.

Are Everton going to sign Guus Til in January?

“I’m going to train with Van Dijk and Wijnaldum!” Til said back in 2018 after being handed his first ever international call-up (SI).

Talk about a ‘pinch me’ moment.

“I’m a big Liverpool fan and now I’m going to play with them! It’s definitely something I’m looking forward to,” Til added.

How strong Til’s Liverpool allegiances are remain to be seen. Would he reject Everton for the likes of Wolves or West Ham out of blind loyalty to his boyhood club?

Or would he be willing to break the bond in order to secure a potentially life-changing move to one of the Premier League’s most historic footballing institutions?

According to TEAMtalk, the under-fire Rafa Benitez hopes to bring in Til during the January transfer window.

The Spaniard seemingly views the free-scoring midfielder as someone capable of adding some much-needed firepower to his often-toothless Toffees side.

Since joining Feyenoord on loan from Russian giants Spartak Moscow last summer, Til has scored 15 goals in 27 games, those perfectly-timed, penalty-area darts reminiscent of one of Merseyside’s greatest sons, a certain Steven Gerrard.

If Til finds the net as regularly for Everton as Gerrard did in Liverpool red, well those 2018 comments will soon be forgotten by those on the Goodison Park terraces.
