BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has slammed Tottenham Hotspur for not re-hiring Mauricio Pochettino and letting the former Spurs boss go to London rivals Chelsea.

Crooks has written on BBC Sport that Tottenham Hotspur should have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their manager and not allowed him to move to Chelsea.

The former Tottenham forward believes that the Argentine boss was keen on returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Pochettino was a huge success during his time at Tottenham.

Under the former Southampton manager, Spurs regularly finished in the Premier League top four, challenged for the title on occasions, and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2019.

The Guardian have reported that Pochettino has agreed to become the new Chelsea boss and will sign the contract soon.

Crooks wrote: “Precisely what Pedro Porro was doing to allow Jacob Ramsey to brush him aside so easily and put the ball so politely into the back of the net I don’t know.

“What I do know is Tottenham Hotspur are in freefall. Spurs totally refused any idea of Mauricio Pochettino returning to the club and allowed the man who took them to the Champions League final to take charge of Chelsea next season, when all indicators suggest he was keen to return to Spurs where he felt he had unfinished business.

“Aston Villa, unlike Spurs, now have a grown-up in charge. Unai Emery is showing what can be achieved when the right managerial appointment is made – his players are playing out of their skins for him.”

Tottenham Hotspur have to move on from Chelsea-linked Mauricio Pochettino

In our view, Tottenham Hotspur need to move on from Mauricio Pochettino now that he is set to take charge of Chelsea.

There is no point in looking back now.

Pochettino, 51, is a very good manager, and if the Argentine was genuinely keen on going to Tottenham, then perhaps Spurs chairman Daniel Levy should have at least made an approach.

Anyway, there is nothing that Tottenham fans can do now about Pochettino, who has already reportedly started planning for summer transfers with Chelsea.

Tottenham are not going to end up in the Premier League top four this season, and Levy has to now step up his search for a new permanent manager.
