Matheus Nunes stunned Dion Dublin after scoring for Wolves against Chelsea on Saturday. His goal came days after Liverpool cooled their interest in his transfer.
Chelsea travelled to Molineux to face Wolves in Frank Lampard’s first match as the interim manager at Stamford Bridge. But Nunes gave his West Midlands outfit the perfect start on 31 minutes. The midfielder thundered a half-volley home at Kepa Arrizabalaga’s near post.
The Blues had a chance to clear their lines before Nunes struck but could only move Daniel Podence’s flick on. Nunes then gleefully strolled into the space Marc Cucurella had vacated to meet the ball. And the 24-year-old made no mistake to net despite facing a tight angle.

Kepa could, potentially, have done more to deny Nunes with his strike sailing straight over the Spaniard. But the goalkeeper had no answers to the 11-cap Portugal international’s hit. It was also Nunes’ first goal for Wolves in his 31st outing in all competitions with the club.
Wolves signed Nunes from Sporting Lisbon last August for an initial £38m, rising to £42m after add-ons. He has since struggled to show a consistent attacking presence in the core of the Molineux engine room. Through his previous 30 games, Nunes only had one assist.

Dion Dublin left stunned just days after Liverpool cool their interest
Nunes’ form since joining Wolves has merited interest from Liverpool in a possible transfer this summer, though. The Telegraph reported in January 2023 that the Anfield outfit were admirers of his last year and made commitments to explore a likely £44m move this year.
Yet The Telegraph now notes that Liverpool have put any interest in a transfer with Wolves for Nunes on the back burner. The Reds are looking at alternative options in his position for this summer with Molineux chiefs now looking to recoup more than £50m to let him leave.
But days after The Telegraph claimed that Liverpool have cooled their interest in a transfer with Wolves, Nunes stunned Dublin with the sheer quality of his goal at home to Chelsea.
“That was incredible from Matheus Nunes,” Dublin said on the BBC’s Final Score. “The way he struck it, he came across it and put a bit of fade on it. It was so true.”
