Newcastle United have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit to sign German defender Nico Schlotterbeck, with Bayern Munich now reportedly out of the race for the centre-back.

According to Bild via Abendzeitung, the Bavarian giants are unlikely to sign the Freiburg star this summer, with those at Bayern in favour of bringing in a more experienced defender rather than an up-and-coming player like Schlotterbeck.

The 22-year-old talent has been one of the breakout Bundesliga stars of the season, and now clubs from both Germany and England are eyeing Schlotterbeck, with Newcastle seemingly the favourites to land the youngster.

90min have previously claimed that the Magpies had a £40m rejected for Schlotterbeck in the January window, with the Athletic now reporting that Tottenham are interested in the German youngster.

Indeed, Schlotterbeck has impressed many fans and pundits this season for Freiburg, and with Bayern now seemingly out of the race to sign the defender, Newcastle are in the clear to bring in the centre-back this summer.

Hailed as a player with ‘enormous potential’ by German national team manager Hansi Flick, Newcastle will now feel confident in landing Schlotterbeck this summer with Bayern now out of the picture, and the defender could be another landmark signing for the Magpies.

Schlotterbeck looks set to leave Freiburg this summer, yet with Bayern seemingly dropping their interest in the youngster, Newcastle will now have the confidence to try and sign the defender.

Indeed, whilst other big clubs such as Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in Schlotterbeck, Newcastle’s financial situation will give the Toon the confidence they need to sign the German, even more so now that Bayern are no longer interested.
