Barry Ferguson has told Go Radio that Rangers fans will be “delighted” if Celtic decide to sell striker Giorgos Giakoumakis this month – with the player earning interest from Japan, America and Italy after a contract impasse.
Giakoumakis, 28, only joined Celtic in the summer of 2021 from VVV-Venlo. The Dutch side were relegated, but he finished as the Eredivisie’s top scorer in the 2021-22 season. He signed a five-year Celtic contract until June 2026.
Since then, he has scored 25 goals in 56 games – despite only starting 22 of those matches. An incredible record. But, Giakoumakis wanted a contract to reflect that and talks have not worked out. The Celtic striker is ready to move on.
Fabrizio Romano says clubs from Italy, Japan and America are interested. J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds are said to be favourites to land the forward. Rangers legend Ferguson says Ibrox fans would be delighted if Celtic sell him.
“I say this all the time about a Postecoglou signing – didn’t know much about him. I don’t think he was up to speed at the start, had an injury. But he has a real physical presence, he works hard,” Ferguson told Go Radio, on Giakoumakis.
“Rangers fans will be delighted if Celtic do a bit of business and let Giakoumakis go. Because, for me, he is a top striker. I was happy not to see him start against Rangers. He brings a presence, he causes problems, and he scores goals.”

Giakoumakis has been brilliant for Celtic but the moral of the story is, Ange Postecoglou sees him as a plan B. Kyogo is first choice and the Japan star suits the way Postecoglou plays. If that does not work, Giakoumakis will be turned to.
To have started less than half the total number of games he has played for Celtic is harsh on him, given his record. So, if he has the chance to leave and join a club where he will start – he is likely to go. Weakening Celtic, but helps Rangers.
