Could Barnsley’s Heckingbottom be the new Nottingham Forest boss?

Barnsley’s Paul Heckingbottom has had his odds on becoming the next Nottingham Forest manager halved with one bookmaker.

Aitor Karanka remains the odds-on (8/13) favourite to succeed Mark Warburton with Sky Bet, but Heckingbottom is now second on the list of potential appointments at 5/1 – having been 10/1 on Tuesday morning.

Former Brighton and Watford manager Oscar Garcia (7/1) and ex-Forest player Roy Keane (8/1) are also among the main contenders as of this evening.

In less than two years as manager, the 40-year-old has taken Barnsley from 12th in League One and established them back in the Championship – having also led his boyhood club to the 2016 Football League Trophy.

The 40-year-old was recently said to be on Sunderland’s radar but remained at Oakwell, where new owners are now in place.

The Sun reported on Tuesday that former Hull City manager Mike Phelan is keen on the Nottingham Forest vacancy, although the 55-year-old does not even feature on Sky Bet’s list of potential appointments.

Forest’s next permanent manager will be their 11th this decade.
