Former Hull City manager Mike Phelan is keen on the Nottingham Forest vacancy, the Sun reports on page 49 of its printed edition on Tuesday.
Aitor Karanka is said to be the front runner for the job, following Mark Warburton’s sacking in New Year’s Eve, and the former Middlesbrough boss’s past success at Championship level make him an appealing candidate.
Whether or not Phelan could compete with Karanka – should the Basque register his interest in the City Ground post – remains to be seen.
The 55-year-old’s management experience is limited to a six-month spell at Hull last season, although he served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United assistant for five years before then.
Forest held promotion-chasing Leeds United to a 0-0 draw on Monday, after which caretaker Gary Brazil insisted that the next Reds boss will inherit a ‘very talented’ squad.
Phelan, who played for Burnley, Norwich City, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion, has also coached at Norwich, Blackpool, Stockport County and Hull.
