Barcelona are looking to pounce for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso after losing Gavi to a season-ending injury.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso may finally get his long-rumoured move to Barcelona in January.

That is according to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, who suggest that Barcelona could move for Lo Celso on loan.

Barcelona were absolutely rocked on Sunday as star midfielder Gavi picked up a major knee injury whilst playing for Spain.

Gavi is now expected to miss the rest of the season and probably Euro 2024, meaning this is a crushing blow for club and country.

Barcelona back in for Giovani Lo Celso after Gavi injury

Barcelona will now try to sign another midfielder to fill in for Gavi with Tottenham ace Giovani Lo Celso seemingly a prime contender.

Reports over the summer suggested that Barcelona boss Xavi had asked the club to sign Lo Celso.

The Argentinian had returned to Tottenham after a loan spell at Villarreal and seemed to have no future at Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou seemed to be impressed in pre-season though and decided to keep Lo Celso around.

That hasn’t translated to Premier League minutes though and Barcelona are now back in the hunt.

It’s stated that Barcelona see Lo Celso as a ‘fantastic’ player to bring in with Gavi now on the treatment table.

Barcelona still have financial issues and a loan for Lo Celso to cover for Gavi’s injury is seemingly ideal for the Catalan giants.

Ange Postecoglou should give Lo Celso a chance

Lo Celso may well fancy a move to Barcelona; the chance to play for Xavi in Catalunya would appeal to many midfielders.

We can’t help but think that Tottenham should give Lo Celso a Premier League opportunity though.

James Maddison is out of action with injury and Postecoglou went with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in his place against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Højbjerg is workmanlike but doesn’t really have the creativity Maddison provides.

The only other player who could really play that role is Lo Celso, who has previously played as an attack-minded midfielder and has shown creativity in the final third.

Maybe Postecoglou isn’t seeing enough from Lo Celso in training and a move to Barcelona will be on the cards, but we would like to see him given a chance before January.
