Barcelona have confirmed that wonderkid midfielder Gavi has signed a new contract at the Nou Camp until June 2026 – amid reports that Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool had all held talks over a possible move.
Gavi, 18, has broken into the starting XI at Barcelona. He is a regular on the team sheet at the moment, despite his tender age. In front of Sergio Busquets, there is hope that Gavi, with Pedri, can be the future of Barcelona.
Indeed, many hope they will be the new Xavi and Andres Iniesta. With Xavi at the helm, he has a distinct chance. This season, the 10-time Spain star has started six of Barca’s seven matches in all competitions. His deal was ending in 2023.
Reports emerged earlier this month that Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City were all keen. They had held meetings at their clubs to discuss moving for Gavi. But Barcelona were always desperate to keep him.
Indeed, they now have done. Barcelona confirmed that Gavi has signed a new deal until June 2026 on their official website and social channels. They also confirm his buyout clause will be a whopping €1billion – or £865million.
Barcelona confirm Gavi contract amid Liverpool and Chelsea reports
Amid all the doubt, hostility and rumour surrounding the future of Barcelona’s young gems – and the financial issues – this is a massive step in the right direction. Gavi is a serious player, competing with Frenkie de Jong in midfield.
While clubs would have been keen on Gavi and arranging a possible pre-contract from January onwards, that is now off the table. Barcelona deserve credit for getting a deal over the line, even if they have been criticised of late.
It is now very unlikely any interested parties continue to pursue a move for Gavi. The midfielder is set for the next few years of his career and while a move may happen down the line – he is more than likely to stay until at least 2025.
