The FIFA World Cup semi-final clash between England and Argentina has been classed as the “highest risk” match of the tournament after the FBI and local police held a meeting this week.
The FBI, FIFA officials and the Atlanta Police Department held a meeting on Monday to discuss concerns over potential issues between the rival supporters who have a long-standing rivalry that transcends soccer.

England vs Argentina is one of soccer’s fiercest rivalries and has provided some of the World Cup’s most iconic ties over the years and it seems officials fear this rivalry could spill into the stands.
There will be separate gates of entry for each set of supporters. While efforts have been made to keep fans apart, once supporters are in the ground, fans will likely mix thanks to FIFA’s ticket resale system.
Atlanta PD issues statement ahead of England vs Argentina
In preparation for the game, Atlanta PD said: “As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming FIFA World Cup semi-final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture.
“Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts, and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
“These proactive measures are designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event.”

In 1982, British forces and Argentina fought for control of the Falklands. Just this week, Argentina’s foreign minister stated their claim over the territory, which was swiftly rejected by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
As the semi-final clash reignites this rivalry, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has stressed that this is just a soccer match and nothing more.
He said: “The message to the Argentine people is that this is a soccer match. We’re going to face a great team with a great coach, but it is just a soccer match, nothing more than that.”
Each team hotel has seen a heavy police presence with increased security around the Mercedes-Benz Stadium where the match will be played.
England‘s World Cup semi-final against Argentina is scheduled to kick off at 3pm local time.
